Photoluminescence of GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions in magnetic fields up to 50 T

PHYSICA B 251 (1998) 562-565

Authors:

AN Priest, RJ Nicholas, HH Cheng, M Van der Burgt, JJ Harris, CT Foxon

Abstract:

We report measurements of photo-luminescence from GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions in the ultra-quantum limit. New features are observed for low electron densities at high magnetic field, which we suggest are associated with the formation of negatively charged excitons, both singlet and triplet states. The dependence of the spectra on temperature and carrier density are presented in support of this theory. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Infrared spectroscopy with a pulsed high field magnet at a free electron laser

PHYSICA B 246 (1998) 208-212

Authors:

L Van Bockstal, L Li, CJGM Langerak, MJ van de Pol, A De Keyser, AFG van der Meer, A Ardavan, J Singleton, RJ Nicholas, F Herlach, R Bogaerts, HU Mueller, M von Ortenberg

Abstract:

A 60 T non-destructive pulsed magnet is developed for use with the continuously tuneable free electron laser "FELIX". Far infrared cyclotron resonance experiments were performed using the energy range of FELIX (5-100 mu m) to study the effect of strong confinement on the charge carriers in delta-doped InSb. Skyrmions and composite fermions for g*=0

PHYSICA B 246 (1998) 1-5

Authors:

RJ Nicholas, DR Leadley, DK Maude, JC Portal, JJ Harris, CT Foxon

Abstract:

We describe the properties of the strongly interacting 2-D electron gas in high magnetic fields whose properties can be described in terms of the formation of composite fermions at fractional Landau level occupancy. For a Landau level occupancy v = 1 the excitations correspond to spin waves for high g-factors and magnetic fields, but when the g-factor is reduced close to zero by the use of hydrostatic pressure, there is strong evidence for the formation of Skyrmions. Studies of the composite fermions in the limit of vanishing Zeeman energy also suggest that skyrmionic excitations can occur for composite fermions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. The polaron effect in GaAs-(Al,Ga)As studied with a pulsed-field magnet: Free-electron-laser combination

PHYSICA B 246 (1998) 400-403

Authors:

CJGM Langerak, L Li, L Van Bockstal, A Ardavan, MJ van de Pol, AFG van der Meer, F Herlach, HU Mueller, RJ Nicholas, J Singleton

Abstract:

The combination of a 60 T pulsed-field magnet and the continuous tunability of a high power, picosecond free-electron laser provides a powerful facility to study, e.g. cyclotron resonance in a wide range of materials with different effective masses and over a wide range of energies. Here we present the first cyclotron resonance data obtained with this new and unique combination of far-infrared radiation and high magnetic fields. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
