Abstract:

We have measured the spectral shape Michel parameters 蟻 and 畏 using leptonic decays of the 蟿, recorded by the CLEO II detector. Assuming e - 渭 universality in the vectorlike couplings, we find 蟻别渭 = 0.735 卤 0.013 卤 0.008, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also present measurements for the parameters for e and 渭 final states separately. 漏 1997 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W 鈫 e谓 events produced in pp collisions at 鈭歴=1.8TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with nondiffractive production is 1.1脳10鈭4 (3.8蟽).The relatively low fraction of W+ jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the Pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to nondiffractive W production ratio is found to be RW=(1.15卤0.55)%.漏 1997 The American Physical Society.
