Living in a loft
Proceedings of Science 122 (2011)
Abstract:
LOFT (Large area Observatory For x-ray Timing) is an innovative mission concept for the next generation of X-ray experiments, submitted to the ESA Call for Medium size missions “M3”. Recent developments in the field of Silicon detectors allowed us to design a realistic observatory devoted to X-ray timing studies with an effective area above 10 m2, operating in the energy range 2-30 keV with an energy resolution of ∼250 eV. Such an exceedingly large area (20 times that of RXTE/PCA), with a time resolution better than 10 µs, will enable unprecedently fast and accurate time variability studies related to accreting collapsed objects (e.g. fast coherent pulsations and QPOs). The scientific payload is complemented by a coded-mask wide field monitor based on similar detectors. In this paper we present the mission concept, the payload design and the expected performances.Long-range and short-range dihadron angular correlations in central PbPb collisions at psNN = 2:76 TeV
Journal of High Energy Physics 2011:7 (2011)
Abstract:
First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (Δν) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (Δø). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (Δø y≈ π) azimuthal correlation is observed at all Δν, as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in Δν are observed for particles with similar ø values. This phenomenon, also known as the \ridge", persists up to at least jΔνj = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (pT) of 2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of pT = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of pT = 10-12 GeV/c. Abstract:
A measurement of W γ and Z γ production in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV is presented. Results are based on a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The electron and muon decay channels of the W and Z are used. The total cross sections are measured for photon transverse energy ETγ>10 GeV and spatial separation from charged leptons in the plane of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle ΔR(ℓ,γ)>0.7, and with an additional dilepton invariant mass requirement of Mℓℓ>50 GeV for the Z γ process. The following cross section times branching fraction values are found: σ(pp→Wγ+X)×B(W→ℓν)=56.3±5.0(stat.)±5.0(syst.)±2.3(lumi.) pb and σ(pp→Zγ+X)×B(Z→ℓℓ)=9.4±1.0(stat.)±0.6(syst.)±0.4(lumi.) pb. These measurements are in agreement with standard model predictions. The first limits on anomalous WW γ, ZZ γ, and Z γγ trilinear gauge couplings at s=7 TeV are set. © 2011 CERN.Measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV
Journal of High Energy Physics 2011:10 (2011)
Abstract:
The Drell-Yan differential cross section is measured in pp collisions at √ s = 7TeV, from a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The cross section measurement, normalized to the measured cross section in the Z region, is reported for both the dimuon and dielectron channels in the dilepton invariant mass range 15{600 GeV. The normalized cross section values are quoted both in the full phase space and within the detector acceptance. The effect of final state radiation is also identified. The results are found to agree with theoretical predictions.
