Abstract:

We report on the first measurement of the angular distributions of final state electrons in ppÌ„â†’Îł*/Z→e +e-+X events produced in the Z boson mass region at √s=1.96TeV. The data sample collected by the CDF II detector for this result corresponds to 2.1fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The angular distributions are studied as a function of the transverse momentum of the electron-positron pair and show good agreement with the Lam-Tung relation, consistent with a spin-1 description of the gluon, and demonstrate that, at high values of the transverse momentum, Z bosons are produced via quark-antiquark annihilation and quark-gluon Compton processes. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract:

This paper describes searches for the pair production of first or second generation scalar leptoquarks using 35pb-1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at √s=7TeV. Leptoquarks are searched in events with two oppositely-charged muons or electrons and at least two jets, and in events with one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. After event selection, the observed yields are consistent with the predicted backgrounds. Leptoquark production is excluded at the 95 CL for masses MLQ<376 (319) GeV and MLQ<422 (362) GeV for first and second generation scalar leptoquarks, respectively, when assuming the branching fraction of a leptoquark to a charged lepton is equal to 1.0 (0.5). © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract:

The ΄(1S), ΄(2S), and ΄(3S) production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV are measured using a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.1±0.3pb -1. Integrated over the rapidity range |y|<2, we find the product of the ΄(1S) production cross section and branching fraction to dimuons to be σ(pp→΄(1S)X) ‱B(΄(1S)→Ό +ÎŒ -)=7.37±0.13-0. 42+0.61±0.81nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is associated with the estimation of the integrated luminosity of the data sample. This cross section is obtained assuming unpolarized ΄(1S) production. With the assumption of fully transverse or fully longitudinal production polarization, the measured cross section changes by about 20%. We also report the measurement of the ΄(1S), ΄(2S), and ΄(3S) differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. © 2011 American Physical Society.
