Abstract:

We present 7-180μm photometry of a sample of hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HyLIGs) obtained with the photometer and camera mounted on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We have used state-of-the-art' radiative transfer models of obscured starbursts and dusty tori to model their broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We find that IRAS F00235+1024, IRAS F14218+3845 and IRAS F15307+3252 require a combination of starburst and AGN components to explain their mid to far-infrared emission, while for TXS0052+471 a dust torus model alone is sufficient. For IRAS F00235+1024 and IRAS F14218+3845 the starburst component is the predominant contributor whereas for IRAS F15307+3252 the dust torus component dominates. The implied star formation rates (SFR) estimated from the starburst infrared luminosities are dM*,all/dt > 1000M⊙yr-1h50-2 and are amongst the highest SFRs estimated to date. We also demonstrate that the well-known radio-FIR correlation observed for extragalactic sources extends into both higher radio and infrared power than previously investigated. The relation for HyLIGs has a mean q value of 1.94. The results of this study imply that better sampling of the IR SEDs of HyLIGs may reveal that both AGN and starburst components are required to explain their emission from the NIR to the sub-millimetre.

Abstract:

We report on a search for a CP-violating asymmetry in the charmless hadronic decay B→K*(892)±π∓, using 9.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity produced at √s = 10.58 GeV and collected with the CLEO detector. We find ACP(B→K* (892)±π∓,)=0.26-0.34+0.33(stat)-0.08+0.10(syst), giving an allowed interval of [-0.31,0.78] at the 90% confidence level. ©2003 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

Inclusive momentum distributions of charged particles in restricted cones around jet axes were measured in dijet events with invariant dijet masses in the range 80 to 600 GeV/c2. Events were produced at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp collisions with a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The results were compared to perturbative QCD calculations carried out in the framework of the modified leading log approximation (MLLA) and assuming local parton-hadron duality. It was shown that the data follow theoretical predictions quite well over the whole range of the jet energies included in this analysis. We extracted the MLLA cutoff scale Qe f f and found a value of 230±40 MeV. The theoretical prediction of Ejetsin θc scaling, where u c is the cone opening angle, was experimentally observed for the first time. From the MLLA fits to the data, two more parameters were extracted: the ratio of parton multiplicities in gluon and quark jets, r = Npartonsg-jet /Npartonsq-jet = 1.9±0.5, and the ratio of the number of charged hadrons to the number of predicted partons in a jet, KLPHDcharged=Nhadronscharged/Npartons=0.56±0.10.

Abstract:

Using 13.5 fb-1 of e+e- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector, we have observed a narrow resonance decaying to D*s+ π0 with a mass near 2.46 GeV/c2. The search for such a state was motivated by the recent discovery by the BaBar Collaboration of a narrow state at 2.32 GeV/c 2, the D*sJ(2317)+, that decays to D s+ π0. Reconstructing the Ds + π0 and D*s+ π0 final states in CLEO data, we observe peaks in both of the corresponding reconstructed mass difference distributions, ΔM(D sπ0) = M(Dsπ0) - M(D s) and ΔM(D*s π0) = M(D*s π0) - M(D*s), both of them at values near 350 MeV/c2. We interpret these peaks as signatures of two distinct states, the D*sJ(2317)+ plus a new state, designated as the DsJ(2463)+. Because of the similar ΔM values, each of these states represents a source of background for the other if photons are lost, ignored or added. A quantitative accounting of these reflections confirms that both states exist. We have measured the mean mass differences 〈ΔM(Ds π0)〉 = 350.0 ±1.2 (stat) ± 1.0 (syst) MeV/c2 for the D*sJ(2317)+ state, and 〈ΔM(D* s π0)〉 = 351.2 ± 1.7 (stat) ± 1.0 (syst) MeV/c2 for the new DsJ(2463)+ state. We have also searched, but find no evidence, for decays of the two states via the channels D*s+ γ, Ds+ γ, and Ds+ π+ π-. The observations of the two states at 2.32 and 2.46 GeV/c2, in the D s+ π0 and D*s+ π0 decay channels, respectively, are consistent with their interpretations as cs̄ mesons with an orbital angular momentum L = 1 and spin and parity JP = 0+ and 1+. © 2003 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We describe a major study of radio source host galaxies being carried out with the HST and ground-based facilities. Our sample is selected from 4 complete samples with different radio flux-density limits, giving a range of three orders of magnitude in radio luminosity at a fixed epoch (z=0.5). High-resolution HST WFPC2 imaging shows that all 44 radio galaxies have flux distributions well fit by an r1/4 law and lying on the Kormendy relation defined by lower redshift ellipticals with a shift in the zero-point to account for passive evolution. Spectroscopic follow-up enables stellar velocity dispersions to be determined and black hole masses estimated. The clustering environments of the radio galaxies are being probed via multi-colour wide-field imaging. Together, these data allow a detailed investigation of how factors such as clustering environment, close interactions and star-formation history affect the accretion rate, ionizing luminosity and jet production from supermassive black holes. © 2003 Elsevier B.V.
