Abstract:

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq νq$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $β$, where $β$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to νq νq$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $β= BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $β$ = 1, $β$ = 0.5 and $β$ = 0.1, respectively.

Abstract:

The rare τ lepton decays to four explicitly identified hadrons have been studied with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring using (7.56±0.15)fb-1 of data collected near s=10.58GeV. The first statistically significant measurements of B(τ-→K-π+π- π0ντ,excluding K0)=(7.4±0.8±1.1)×10-4 and B(τ-→K-K+π-π0ντ)=(5.5±1.4±1.2)×10-5 are presented, including the first observation of the decay τ-→K- ωντ with branching fraction, (4.1±0.6±0.7)×10- 4. We publish the first upper limit for B(τ-→K-K+K-π0ντ) <4.8(6.1)×10-6 at 90% (95%) confidence level. We measure for the first time the invariant mass distributions, which together with the branching fraction measurements are important ingredients that can be used to extract the standard model parameters, the strange quark mass, and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi- Maskawa element Vus. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We have undertaken deep optical imaging observations of three 6.2 < z < 6.5 quasar fields in the i′ and z′ filters. These data are used to search for foreground galaxies that are gravitationally lensing the quasars and distant galaxies physically associated with the quasars. Foreground galaxies are found closer than 5″ to the lines of sight of two of the three quasars. However, the faintness of these galaxies suggests that they have fairly low masses and provide only weak magnifications (μ ≲1.1). No convincing galaxies physically associated with the quasars are found, and the number of i′-band dropouts is consistent with that found in random fields. We consider the expected dark matter halo masses that host these quasars under the assumption that a correlation between black hole mass and dark matter halo mass exists. We show that the steepness of the high-mass tail of the halo mass function at this redshift, combined with realistic amounts of scatter in this correlation, leads to expected halo masses substantially lower than previously believed. This analysis can explain the lack of companion galaxies found here and the low dynamical mass recently published for one of the quasars. © 2005. The American Astronomical Society.
