Abstract:

Using 蠄(3770)鈫扗D虅 events collected with the CLEO-c detector at the Cornell e+e- storage ring, tagged by fully reconstructing one D meson in a hadronic decay mode, we measure absolute branching fractions and differential decay rates for D0鈫捪-e+谓e, D+鈫捪0e+谓e, D0鈫扠-e+谓e, and D+鈫扠虅0e+谓e. The measured decay rates are used to study semileptonic form factors governing these transitions and to test unquenched Lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations. We average our results with previously published CLEO-c measurements of the same quantities using a neutrino reconstruction technique. Combining LQCD calculations of form factor absolute normalizations f+(0) and measurements of f+蟺(0)|Vcd| and f+K(0)|Vcs|, we find |Vcd|=0.222(8)(3)(23) and |Vcs|=1.018(10)(8)(106), where the uncertainties are statistical, experimental systematic, and from LQCD, respectively. 漏 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We describe the scientific motivations, the mission concept and the instrumentation of SPACE, a class-M mission proposed for concept study at the first call of the ESA Cosmic-Vision 2015-2025 planning cycle. SPACE aims to produce the largest three-dimensional evolutionary map of the Universe over the past 10 billion years by taking near-IR spectra and measuring redshifts for more than half a billion galaxies at 0鈭<鈭坺鈭<鈭2 down to AB~23 over 3蟺 sr of the sky. In addition, SPACE will also target a smaller sky field, performing a deep spectroscopic survey of millions of galaxies to AB~26 and at 2鈭<鈭坺鈭<鈭10鈭+. These goals are unreachable with ground-based observations due to the 鈮500 times higher sky background (see e.g. Aldering, LBNL report number LBNL-51157, 2001). To achieve the main science objectives, SPACE will use a 1.5 m diameter Ritchey-Chretien telescope equipped with a set of arrays of Digital Micro-mirror Devices covering a total field of view of 0.4 deg2, and will perform large-multiplexing multi-object spectroscopy (e.g. 鈮6000 targets per pointing) at a spectral resolution of R~400 as well as diffraction-limited imaging with continuous coverage from 0.8 to 1.8 渭m. Owing to the depth, redshift range, volume coverage and quality of its spectra, SPACE will reveal with unique sensitivity most of the fundamental cosmological signatures, including the power spectrum of density fluctuations and its turnover. SPACE will also place high accuracy constraints on the dark energy equation of state parameter and its evolution by measuring the baryonic acoustic oscillations imprinted when matter and radiation decoupled, the distance-luminosity relation of cosmological supernovae, the evolution of the cosmic expansion rate, the growth rate of cosmic large-scale structure, and high-z galaxy clusters. The datasets from the SPACE mission will represent a long lasting legacy for the whole astronomical community whose data will be mined for many years to come. 漏 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Abstract:

We analyse the relationships between galaxy morphology, colour, environment and stellar mass using data for over 100,000 objects from Galaxy Zoo, the largest sample of visually classified morphologies yet compiled. We conclusively show that colour and morphology fractions are very different functions of environment. Both are sensitive to stellar mass; however, at fixed stellar mass, while colour is also highly sensitive to environment, morphology displays much weaker environmental trends. Only a small part of both relations can be attributed to variation in the stellar mass function with environment. Galaxies with high stellar masses are mostly red, in all environments and irrespective of their morphology. Low stellar-mass galaxies are mostly blue in low-density environments, but mostly red in high-density environments, again irrespective of their morphology. The colour-density relation is primarily driven by variations in colour fractions at fixed morphology, in particular the fraction of spiral galaxies that have red colours, and especially at low stellar masses. We demonstrate that our red spirals primarily include galaxies with true spiral morphology. We clearly show there is an environmental dependence for colour beyond that for morphology. Before using the Galaxy Zoo morphologies to produce the above results, we first quantify a luminosity-, size- and redshift-dependent classification bias that affects this dataset, and probably most other studies of galaxy population morphology. A correction for this bias is derived and applied to produce a sample of galaxies with reliable morphological type likelihoods, on which we base our analysis.

Abstract:

We present a measurement of the ratio of the tt虅 production cross section via gluon-gluon fusion to the total tt虅 production cross section in pp虅 collisions at s=1.96TeV at the Tevatron. Using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 955pb-1 recorded by the CDF II detector at Fermilab, we select events based on the tt虅 decay to lepton+jets. Using an artificial neural network technique we discriminate between tt虅 events produced via qq虅 annihilation and gg fusion, and find Gf=蟽(gg鈫抰t虅)/ 蟽(pp虅鈫抰t虅)<0.33 at the 68% confidence level. This result is combined with a previous measurement to obtain the most stringent measurement of this quantity by CDF to date, Gf=0.07-0.07+0.15. 漏 2009 The American Physical Society.
