Abstract:

We present a measurement of the tt虅 differential cross section with respect to the tt虅 invariant mass, d蟽/dMtt虅, in pp虅 collisions at s=1.96TeV using an integrated luminosity of 2.7fb-1 collected by the CDF II experiment. The tt虅 invariant mass spectrum is sensitive to a variety of exotic particles decaying into tt虅 pairs. The result is consistent with the standard model expectation, as modeled by PYTHIA with CTEQ5L parton distribution functions. 漏 2009 The American Physical Society.

Galaxy Zoo: A correlation between coherence of galaxy spin chirality and star formation efficiency

Abstract:

We report on the finding of a correlation between galaxies' past star formation activity and the degree to which neighbouring galaxies rotation axes are aligned. This is obtained by cross-correlating star formation histories, derived with MOPED, and spin direction (chirality), as determined by the Galaxy Zoo project, for a sample of SDSS galaxies. Our findings suggest that spiral galaxies which formed the majority of their stars early (z > 2) tend to display coherent rotation over scales of ~10 Mpc/h. The correlation is weaker for galaxies with significant recent star formation. We find evidence for this alignment at more than the 5-sigma level, but no correlation with other galaxy stellar properties. This finding can be explained within the context of hierarchical tidal-torque theory if the SDSS galaxies harboring the majority of the old stellar population where formed in the past, in the same filament and at about the same time. Galaxies with significant recent star formation instead are in the field, thus influenced by the general tidal field that will align them in random directions or had a recent merger which would promote star formation, but deviate the spin direction.

Abstract:

We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the bottom quark produced from gluino decays in data from 2.5 fb;{-1} of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. Candidate events are selected requiring two or more jets and large missing transverse energy. At least two of the jets are required to be tagged as originating from a b quark to enhance the sensitivity. The results are in good agreement with the prediction of the standard model processes, giving no evidence for gluino decay to bottom squarks. This result constrains the gluino-pair-production cross section to be less than 40 fb at 95% credibility level for a gluino mass of 350 GeV/c;{2}.

Abstract:

This Letter presents a search for exclusive Z boson production in proton-antiproton collisions at s=1.96TeV, using the CDFII detector. No exclusive Z鈫抣+l- candidates are observed and the first upper limit on the exclusive Z cross section in hadron collisions is found to be 蟽excl(Z)<0.96pb at 95% confidence level. In addition, eight candidate exclusive dilepton events from the process pp虅鈫抪纬纬p虅 鈫抪l+l-p虅 are observed, and a measurement of the cross section for Mll>40GeV/c2 and |畏l|<4 is found to be 蟽=0.24-0.10+0.13pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction. 漏 2009 The American Physical Society.
