Abstract:

The generation of GeV-scale electron beams in the plasma channel formed in a gas-filled capillary discharge waveguide is investigated. Electron beams with energies above 900 MeV and with root-mean-square divergence of 3.5 mrad are observed for plasma densities of 2.15 脳 1018 cm-3 and a peak input laser power of only 55 TW. The variation of the electron energy with the plasma density is measured and found to exhibit a maximum at plasma densities for which the dephasing length approximately matches the length of the plasma channel. Injection and acceleration of electrons at the relatively low plasma density of 3.2 脳 1017 cm-3 is observed. The energy spectra of the generated electron beams are shown to exhibit good shot-to-shot reproducibility, with the observed variations attributable to the measured shot-to-shot jitter of the laser parameters. Two methods for correcting for the effects on the measured energy spectrum of off-axis electron beam propagation are investigated. 漏 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Modelling of the emma ns-ffag ring using gpt

IPAC 2012 - International Particle Accelerator Conference 2012 (2012) 319-321

Abstract:

EMMA (Electron Machine with Many Applications) is a prototype non-scaling Fixed-Field Alternating Gradient (ns-FFAG) accelerator whose construction at Daresbury Laboratory, UK, was completed in the autumn of 2010. The energy recovery linac ALICE [1] will serve as an injector for EMMA, within an energy range of 10 to 20 MeV. The injection line consists of a symmetric 30o dogleg to extract the beam from ALICE, a matching section and a tomography section for transverse emittance measurements. This is followed by a transport section to the injection point of the EMMA ring. The ring is composed of 42 cells, each containing one focusing and one defocusing quadrupole. Commissioning of the EMMA ring started in late 2010. A number of different injection energy and bunch charge configurations are planned; for some the effects of spacecharge may be significant. It is therefore necessary to model the electron beam transport in the injection line and ring using a code capable of both calculating the effect of and compensating for space-charge. Therefore the General Particle Tracer (GPT) code [2] has been used. A range of injection beam parameters have been modelled for comparison with experimental results. Copyright 漏 2012 by IEEE.

Multiple pulse resonantly enhanced laser plasma wakefield acceleration

AIP Conference Proceedings 1507 (2012) 872-873

Abstract:

We present an outline of experiments being conducted at Oxford University on multiple-pulse, resonantly-enhanced laser plasma wakefield acceleration. This method of laser plasma acceleration uses trains of optimally spaced low energy short pulses to drive plasma oscillations and may enable laser plasma accelerators to be driven by compact and efficient fibre laser sources operating at high repetition rates. 漏 2012 American Institute of Physics.
