Abstract:

We report a measurement of the top-quark mass using events collected by the CDF II detector from pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. We calculate a likelihood function for the top-quark mass in events that are consistent with tt --> bl(-)nu(l)bl'+ nu'(l) decays. The likelihood is formed as the convolution of the leading-order matrix element and detector resolution functions. The joint likelihood is the product of likelihoods for each of 33 events collected in 340 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity, yielding a top-quark mass M(t) = 165.2 +/- 6.1(stat) +/- 3.4(syst) GeV/c2. This first application of a matrix-element technique to tt --> bl+ nu(l)bl'- nu(l') decays gives the most precise single measurement of M(t) in dilepton events. Combined with other CDF run II measurements using dilepton events, we measure M(t) = 167.9 +/- 5.2(stat) +/- 3.7(syst) GeV/c2.

Abstract:

The two-photon width of χc2(P23) state of charmonium has been measured using 14.4fb-1 of e+e- data taken at s=9.46-11.30GeV with the CLEO III detector. The γγ-fusion reaction studied is e+e-→e+e-γγ, γγ→χc2→γJ/ψ→γe+e-(μ+μ-). We measure Γγγ(χc2)B(χc2→γJ/ψ)B(J/ ψ→e+e-+μ+μ-)=13.2±1.4(stat)±1.1(syst)eV, and obtain Γγγ(χc2)=559±57(stat)±48(syst) ±36(br)eV. This result is in excellent agreement with the result of γγ-fusion measurement by Belle and is consistent with that of the p̄p→χc2→γγ measurement, when they are both reevaluated using the recent CLEO result for the radiative decay χc2→γJ/ψ. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We present the first experimental limits on high-q2 contributions to charmless semileptonic B decays of the form expected from the weak annihilation (WA) decay mechanism. Such contributions could bias determinations of |Vub| from inclusive measurements of B→Xulν. Using a wide range of models based on available theoretical input we set a limit of ΓWA/Γb→u<7.4% (90% confidence level) on the WA fraction, and assess the impact on previous inclusive determinations of |Vub|. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

Simulation of heavily irradiated silicon pixel detectors

Abstract:

We show that doubly peaked electric fields are necessary to describe grazing-angle charge collection measurements of irradiated silicon pixel sensors. A model of irradiated silicon based upon two defect levels with opposite charge states and the trapping of charge carriers can be tuned to produce a good description of the measured charge collection profiles in the fluence range from 0.5x10^{14} Neq/cm^2 to 5.9x10^{14} Neq/cm^2. The model correctly predicts the variation in the profiles as the temperature is changed from -10C to -25C. The measured charge collection profiles are inconsistent with the linearly-varying electric fields predicted by the usual description based upon a uniform effective doping density. This observation calls into question the practice of using effective doping densities to characterize irradiated silicon. The model is now being used to calibrate pixel hit reconstruction algorithms for CMS.
