Abstract:

The ATLAS experiment at the LHC has measured the centrality dependence of charged particle pseudorapidity distributions over |畏|<2 in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 鈭歴 NN=2.76 TeV. In order to include particles with transverse momentum as low as 30 MeV, the data were recorded with the central solenoid magnet off. Charged particles were reconstructed with two algorithms (2-point "tracklets" and full tracks) using information from the pixel detector only. The lead-lead collision centrality was characterized by the total transverse energy in the forward calorimeter in the range 3.2<|畏|<4.9. Measurements are presented of the per-event charged particle pseudorapidity distribution, dN ch/d畏, and the average charged particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity interval |畏|<0.5 in several intervals of collision centrality. The results are compared to previous mid-rapidity measurements at the LHC and RHIC. The variation of the mid-rapidity charged particle yield per colliding nucleon pair with the number of participants is consistent with lower sNN results. The shape of the dN ch/d畏 distribution is found to be independent of centrality within the systematic uncertainties of the measurement. 漏 2012 CERN.

Abstract:

We have measured the W-boson mass MW using data corresponding to 2.2fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected in pp虅 collisions at 鈭歴=1.96TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting of 470126 W鈫抏谓 candidates and 624708 W鈫捨嘉 candidates yield the measurement MW=80387卤12 stat.卤15syst.=80387卤19MeV/c2. This is the most precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the precision of all previous measurements combined. 漏 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract:

This Letter presents a search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in the decay channel H鈫抁Z(*)鈫掆創+鈩-鈩'+鈩'-, where 鈩, 鈩'=e or 渭, using proton-proton collisions at 鈭歴=7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb-1. The four-lepton invariant mass distribution is compared with Standard Model background expectations to derive upper limits on the cross section of a Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass between 110 GeV and 600 GeV. The mass ranges 134-156 GeV, 182-233 GeV, 256-265 GeV and 268-415 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. The largest upward deviations from the background-only hypothesis are observed for Higgs boson masses of 125 GeV, 244 GeV and 500 GeV with local significances of 2.1, 2.2 and 2.1 standard deviations, respectively. Once the look-elsewhere effect is considered, none of these excesses are significant. 漏 2012 CERN.

Abstract:

A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb -1. Limits are set on the cross section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance of 3.1蟽. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance 鈮3.1蟽 anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is estimated to be 1.8蟽. More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess. 漏 2012 CERN.
