Abstract:

We have added an optical potential to a conventional time-averaged orbiting potential (TOP) trap to create a highly anisotropic hybrid trap for ultracold atoms. Axial confinement is provided by the optical potential; the maximum frequency currently obtainable in this direction is 2.2 kHz for rubidium. The radial confinement is independently controlled by the magnetic trap and can be a factor of 700 times smaller than in the axial direction. This large anisotropy is more than sufficient to confine condensates with ∼105 atoms in a quasi-2D (Q2D) regime, and we have verified this by measuring a change in the free expansion of the condensate; our results agree with a variational model. © 2005 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Abstract:

We report on a search for the recently reported X(3872) state using 15.1 fb -1 of e + e - data taken in the √s = 9.46-11.30 GeV region. Separate searches for the production of the X(3872) in untagged γγ fusion and e +e - annihilation following initial state radiation are made by taking advantage of the unique angular correlation between the leptons from the decay J/ψ → l + l - in X(3872) decay to Ï€ + Ï€ - J/ψ. No signals are observed in either case, and 90% confidence upper limits are established as (2J + 1)Γ γγ(X(3872))B(X → Ï€ + Ï€ - ´³/ψ) < 12.9 eV and Γ ee(X(3872))B(X → Ï€ + Ï€ - ´³/ψ)< 8.3 eV. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:

We investigate the decays D 0 → Ï€ - â„“ + v and D 0 → K - â„“ ++ v, where â„“ is e or μ, using approximately 7 fb -1 of data collected with the CLEO III detector. We find R 0 ≡ ℬ(D 0 → Ï€ -- e +±¹)/ℬ(¶Ù 0 → K - e + v) = 0.082 ± 0.006 ± 0.005. Fits to the kinematic distributions of the data provide parameters describing the form factor of each mode. Combining the form factor results and R 0 gives |f + Ï€(0)| 2|V cd| 2/|f + K(0)| 2|V cs| 2 = 0.038 -0.007-0.003 +0.006+0.005. © 2005 The American Physical Society.
