Abstract:

A strong signal for double parton scattering (DP) is observed in a 16 pb-1 sample of p̄ p → γ + 3 jets + X data from the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. The process-independent DP parameter, σeff, is obtained without reference to theoretical calculations by comparing observed DP events to events with hard scatterings at separate p̄ p collisions. The result, σeff = (14.5 ± 1.7-2.3+1.7) mb, represents a significant improvement over previous measurements. For the first time, the Feynman x dependence of the σeff parameter is investigated, and no dependence is seen.

Abstract:

We present the results of a search for third generation leptoquark (LQ) pairs in 110 ± 8 pb-1 of pp collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume third generation leptoquarks decay to a τ lepton and a b quark with branching ratio β. We observe one candidate event, consistent with standard model background expectations. We place upper limits on σ(p̄p → LQLQ) · β2 as a function of the leptoquark mass MLQ. We exclude at 95% confidence level scalar leptoquarks with MLQ < 99 GeV/c2, gauge vector leptoquarks with MLQ < 225 GeV/c2, and nongauge vector leptoquarks with MLQ < 170 GeV/c2 for β= 1.

Abstract:

We report on a study of color coherence effects in pp- collisions at a center of mass energy √s = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the DØ detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe the presence of initial-to-final state color interference with the spatial correlations between soft and hard jets in multijet events in the central and in forward pseudorapidity regions. The results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to the predictions of script O sign(α3s) QCD calculations. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract:

We report on the measurement of W-boson pair-production with the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre-of-mass energy of 172.13 GeV. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 10.25 pb-1 we select 110 four-fermion events with pairs of hadronic jets or leptons with high invariant masses. Branching fractions of W decays into different fermion-antifermion pairs are determined with and without the assumption of charged-current lepton universality. The branching fraction for hadronic W decays is measured to be: S(W → hadrons) = 64.2+3.7-3.8 (stat.) ± 0.5 (syst.) %. Combining all final states the total cross section for W-pair production is measured to be: σww = 12.27+1.41-1.32 (stat.) ± 0.23 (syst.) pb. The results are in good agreement with the Standard Model. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract:

We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W → eν events produced in pp collisions at √s=1.8TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with nondiffractive production is 1.1×10−4 (3.8σ).The relatively low fraction of W+ jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the Pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to nondiffractive W production ratio is found to be RW=(1.15±0.55)%.© 1997 The American Physical Society.
