JADES data release 4 – Paper i. Sample selection, observing strategy and redshifts of the complete spectroscopic sample
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Oxford University Press 549:4 (2026) stag836
Abstract:
This paper accompanies Data Release 4 of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, which presents the full NIRSpec spectroscopy of the survey. We provide spectra of 5190 targets across Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-North and GOODS-South (including the Hubble Ultra Deep Field), observed with the low-dispersion (–300) prism and three medium-resolution () gratings spanning m; 2654 were also observed with the higher resolution () G395H grating. The tiered survey design obtained h exposures for galaxies in the Deep and Ultra Deep tiers, and shallower observations (–3 h per setting) of galaxies in the Medium tiers. Targets were selected from photometric redshifts or colours, with priority given to rest-UV-selected galaxies at and F444W-selected galaxies at . We describe the full target selection and present spectroscopic redshifts and success rates. In total, we obtain robust redshifts for 3297 galaxies, including 396 at and 2545 at . To facilitate uniform analyses, we define ‘gold’ subsamples based on UV- and F444W-selection. Using the parent samples and redshift success rates, we construct rest-UV luminosity functions at from the Medium- and Deep-JWST tiers. Our number densities agree well with previous determinations from both photometric and spectroscopic samples, with modest interloper fractions confirming the reliability of photometric UV-bright galaxy selections at these redshifts.JADES Data Release 4 – Paper II. Data reduction, analysis, and emission-line fluxes of the complete spectroscopic sample
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Oxford University Press 549:4 (2026) stag939
Abstract:
We present the fourth data release of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), providing deep spectroscopic observations in the two GOODS fields. A companion paper presents the target selection, spectroscopic redshifts and success rates, and in this paper, we discuss the data reduction and present emission-line flux measurements. The spectroscopy in this work consists of medium-depth, deep, and ultradeep NIRSpec/MSA spectra of 5190 targets, covering the spectral range m and observed with both the low-dispersion prism () and all three medium-resolution gratings (). We describe the data reduction, analysis and description of the data products included in this data release. In total, we measured 3297 robust redshifts out of 5190 targets, spanning a redshift range from up to , including 974 at . This data release includes 1D and 2D fully reduced spectra with 3- and 5-pixel extractions, with slit-loss corrections and background subtraction optimized for point sources. Furthermore, we provide redshifts and SNR > 5 emission-line flux catalogues for the prism and grating spectra, as well as new guidelines to use these data products. Lastly, we are launching a new JADES online data base, designed to enable quick selection and browsing of this data release. Altogether, these data provide the largest statistical sample to date including both PRISM and medium grating spectra across full NIRSpec wavelength range to characterize the properties of galaxy populations across cosmic time.Hitting the slopes: a spectroscopic view of UV continuum slopes of galaxies reveals a reddening at z > 9.5

Abstract:
The ultraviolet (UV) continuum slope of galaxies, , is a powerful diagnostic of the metallicity and ages of stars, nebular gas properties, dust content, and the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons. In this study, we present measurements for 395 spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at selected primarily from JADES, using high-quality JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) NIRSpec/PRISM spectra. We find a median , finding a mild increase in blueness of with increasing redshift and fainter UV magnitudes. Interestingly, we find evidence for reddening of the average at , deviating from the trend observed at . Using stacked spectra in bins of redshift and , we derive trends between and dust attenuation, metallicity, ionization parameter, and stellar age indicators, finding a lack of dust attenuation to be the dominant driver of bluer -values. We further report five galaxies with , which show a range of spectroscopic properties and signs of significant LyC photon leakage. Finally, we show that the redder -values at may require rapid build-up of dust reservoirs in the very early Universe or a significant contribution from the nebular continuum emission to the observed UV spectra, with the nebular continuum fraction depending on the gas temperatures and densities. We show that in the absence of dust, nebular emission at cm can reproduce the range of red that we see in our sample. Higher gas densities can also redden the nebular continuum emission, potentially explaining the observed -values.JWST observes the assembly of a massive galaxy at z ∼ 4

Abstract:
We present JWST observations of the radio galaxy TGSSJ1530+1049, spectroscopically confirmed at . NIRCam images and NIRSpec/IFU spectroscopy ( ) show that TGSSJ1530+1049 is part of one of the densest-known structures of continuum and line-emitting objects found at these redshifts. NIRCam images show a number of distinct continuum objects and evidence of interactions traced by diffuse emission, and the NIRSpec IFU cube reveals further strong line emitting regions. We identify six continuum and four additional strong Halpha emitting sources with weaker or no underlying continuum within the 3’‘x3’’ IFU field. From spatial alignment with high-resolution radio data and emission line profiles, the radio AGN host galaxy is clearly identified. The bright Halpha emission (but not the optical components) is distributed remarkably linearly along the radio axis, suggestive of a biconical illumination zone by a central obscured AGN. The emission line kinematics indicate jet-gas interactions on scales of a few kpc. However, due to large relative velocities and presence of underlying continuum, the alignment with the radio structure appears to be, at least partly, caused by a particular configuration of interacting galaxies. At least four objects within a 10x10 (projected) kpc area which includes the radio source have high stellar masses (log( ) and star formation rates in the range 70-163 yr. Using a stellar mass-based analysis, we predict a total dark matter halo mass of . Based on the physical separations and velocity differences between the galaxies, it is expected that these galaxies will merge to form a massive galaxy within a few Gyr. The system qualitatively resembles the forming brightest cluster galaxies in cosmological simulations that form early through a rapid succession of mergers.megatron: the environments of Population III stars at Cosmic Dawn and their connection to present-day galaxies
