The effects of a pyrrolidine functional group on the magnetic properties of N@C60

Chemical Physics Letters 432:4-6 (2006) 523-527

Authors:

J Zhang, JJL Morton, MR Sambrook, K Porfyrakis, A Ardavan, GAD Briggs

Abstract:

A new stable pyrrolidine functionalized fullerene derivative, C69H10N2O2, has been synthesized, purified by high performance liquid chromatography, and characterized by MALDI mass spectrometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance. The magnetic properties of the analogous endohedral species have been studied by both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed EPR. CW-EPR spectra indicated an anisotropic hyperfine interaction and a permanent zero-field-splitting (ZFS). Both CW and pulsed EPR showed the ZFS parameter Deff to be around 17 MHz. Pulsed EPR revealed a biexponential decay in both T1 and T2, yielding a molecular tumbling correlation time τc of 31.4 ± 2.5 ps. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-field studies of the slow thermal death of interlayer coherence in quasi-two-dimensional metals

Journal of Physics: Conference Series 51:1 (2006) 319-322

Authors:

J Singleton, PA Goddard, A Ardavan, A Bangura, RD McDonald, J Schlueter

Abstract:

The interlayer magnetoresistance zz of the organic metal κ-(BEDTTTF)2Cu(NCS)2 has been studied in fields B of up to 45 T and at temperatures T from 0.5 K to 50 K. The peak in zz seen in exactly in-plane fields, a definitive signature of interlayer coherence, remains to Ts exceeding the Anderson criterion for incoherent transport by a factor ∼ 25. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMROs) due to Fermi-surface orbits are suppressed by rising T, with a T2dependence suggesting electron-electron scattering. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.
